PRT Workshop - 07/08

Topics covered:

- Teaching as inquiry
- Meeting the RTC's
- National Standards (focus on writing)
- Culturally responsible pedagogy

What can I take away from the course:

A lot of the material I have been exposed to previously either on previous workshops or as part of in school professional development.

However, the section covering National Standards for writing provided some useful information that can be used to tweak my writing programme. being introduced to the 9 step cycle of writing has helped give me a clear process to follow to ensure I am teaching to the standards.

The 9 step cycle for writing
Step One:

'What do you want you students to get better at in their writing?
Plan from the matrix/literacy learning progressions and class data. Unpack into learning intentions and expectations/outcomes.  COMPLETE

Step Two:

Share illustrations of expected learning intentions - through exemplars/other work samples - discuss and analyse these.

COMPLETE

Step Three:

Co-construct success criteria with students orally and record so they are displayed visually.

1
The explanation begins with an introduction to the topic.

2
Each part of the topic is written in a new paragraph.

3
Each part is backed up by supporting information, giving the "how" or "why" details. There is also "when" and "where" information.

4
The parts and paragraphs are in a logical order.

5
The explanation ends with a summary.

6
The summary includes the main points and makes an interesting comment.

7
A variety of sentence beginnings and lengths have been used to make the explanation more interesting.

COMPLETE

Step Four:

Set goals with students - encourage goal-setting against the criteria. There may be class/group and individual learning intentions.

Things I noticed that need working on:

Next time I write an explanation, I will

COMPLETE

Step Five:

Teach to the criteria - motivate by modelling and demonstrating at the whole class/small group and individual level.

COMPLETE

Step Six:

Encourage students to practise to these criteria.

COMPLETE

Step Seven:

Give oral and/or written feedback and prompts against goals/criteria.

COMPLETE (need to get better at)

Step Eight:

Encourage self and peer assessment to identify where to next? Teacher assess against the criteria - record this in some way.

COMPLETE
