What did we cover?
- Sharing of teaching as inquiry
- Discussed own practice with other teachers
- Numeracy and making OTJ's against the standards
- Tataiako - Culturally responsive practice.
What Did I learn?
The bulk of the day was about sharing and revisiting areas that I am comfortable with in my teaching.
One area in particular, however got me thinking. This was our discussions around the Tataikako document, and the requirements, or success criteria, a teacher needs to fulfil in order to meet the registered teacher criteria through a culturally responsive practice.
I decided to download the document and self-assess myself against these criteria to determine what areas, if any, I need to further develop.

Next Steps and implications for further practice:
My self-assessment tells me that I need to further develop in the following areas:
- Communication with whanau, hapu, iwi and the community
- Conducting a programme that affirms the language, culture and identity of Maori learners
How can I achieve this?
Communication:
- Bring attention to the class blog as a forum for enabling whanau and friends to celebrate the success of their children
- Ring parents with positive feedback (not just negative)
Affirming Maori learners:
- Find out about local Iwi, environment, history and heritage
- Incorporate this into learning programme. Use students and community members as experts.
