Practising Teacher Criteria #2

Demonstrate commitment to promoting the well-being of all ākonga

Key Indicators:

Take all reasonable steps to provide and maintain a teaching and learning environment that is physically, socially, culturally and emotionally safe ii. acknowledge and respect the languages, heritages and cultures of all ākonga
iii. comply with relevant regulatory and statutory requirements

Reflective Question:

How do I show in my practice that I actively promote the wellbeing of all akonga for whom I am responsible?

  • Re-enforcing the school values through classroom behaviour management . For example - each week we focus on one of the school values and break down what it looks like, feels like and sounds like when used in the classroom. I then try and catch students using the value and they are rewarded using our class positive reward system.
  • Following the PB4L principles the language we use in the classroom centres around 'catching' positive behaviour and re-directing unwanted behaviours. For example - "I like the way such and such showed courage to share his/her answer with the class.

Where to Next?

  • Ensuring the safety of the students in my class is an on-going priority. Physical safety is an on-going concern as there are some students that have difficulty controlling their aggression and continue to act out. I worry that the aggressor or a student in the firing line will get hurt. I will address this through our focus on understanding emotions and what we can do when we feel our aggression levels start to reach crisis point.
