Date:
24.5.17
Focus:
How are we going - what questions do we have?
Big Idea:
Student agency
Key Ideas/Messages that informed/or challenge my teaching practice
  • Focusing on the ‘Why’ is the key to helping students take risks and engage in what they are doing.
  • There is no set format for how a writing programme should look. Depends on students needs.
  • It is no use teaching writing skills in isolation as students rarely see the point.
  • Creating a genuine purpose for writing is the key and then the skills can be identified and applied from there.
  • Having a topic for writing can help create a purpose.
  • Students are more interested in learning a skill when they know they are going to need it.
  • Accountability is important.
  • Shared Writing does not have to happen every day.
Implications/Actions for my teaching practice
  • I plan to introduce a topic and have students decide what text type they might use to write about the topic.
  • This will help give clear focus areas for each workshop.
  • Shared reading can also be used to focus on text types spotlighting on the features of each type.
  • Workshops can focus on writing skills and how they look in that particular text type
