Rita Palmer - Characteristics of Student Agency
Date:

Focus:
Rita Palmer - Characteristics of Student Agency
Big Idea:
What are the traits of agentic learners and how do we foster this?
Key Ideas/Messages that informed/or challenge my teaching practice
Pre session:

The Agentic Learner

Characteristics/Traits
How we could develop it
Risk takers
  • Allow opportunities for students to take risks.
  • Create an environment in which students feel safe to make mistakes.
  • Promote the notion that mistakes are part of learning.
  • Praise students who take risks - focus on the process - not just the end result
Self-Aware (reflective)(strengths/weaknesses)
Provide opportunities for reflection
  • On a scale of 1-5, how was the learning experience for you today?
  • On a Post it, tell the part of the lesson that was most helpful and one thing that didn’t work well.
  • Write one thing you want me to know
  • Finish this thought “My biggest concern about today’s lesson is….”
  • Finish this thought “I’m good on this……. . I could use some help on this….”
Students are taught and are given the opportunity to practice giving others feedback/feedforward.
Students take on board and use teacher and student feedback
Helping students to become more aware of what ‘good readers/writers/mathematicians’ do.

Questioning

Teachers shared what they were doing in their classes that they are doing to promote the traits of being a self directed learner.

Implications/Actions for my teaching practice
We have now made a list of the characteristics and behaviours of an agentic learner.

From here Rita is to provide us with some questions to reflect on what systems that we use to provide opportunities for students to learn and practise these skills.

We decided as a team that it would be best to make small adjustments to our programmes, focusing on one or two skills at a time.

For me, my focus is on helping students to become more self-aware of their abilities as learners. To begin with I will allow atleast 5mins at the end of each sessions to have students reflect on their learning using the questions from above.
