WHAT
Moving away from the terms digital citizens and cyber bullying. People are flesh and blood - we should be focusing on values.
Duty of care - don't think what if you're wrong, what if you're right.
Follow procedures, not emotions. Don't apply the rule of optimism.
If someone reveals something to you - record what was said as soon as you can after. Record time, date, location. Sign your notes after to show that you have re-read them and considered them. One teacher reported something to their principal who did nothing and said that the person was a "good guy". The teacher then emailed themselves with the details of the discussion (using quotation marks). This provides a date stamp to cover the teacher.
Teachers need to act without delay as soon as the have a concern. Report to the principal
Trust your gut feeling.
Encourage teachers to talk about situations or behaviours that they think are not consistent with the role of a teacher.
- Teachers engaging in opinion discussions with students via text etc
- Teachers that give gifts
- Teachers that get caught up with the dramas of the family and ignore the students. Again a reminder to report concerns.
Your laptop is owned by the school. Be careful to secure it and protect yourself
SO WHAT/NOW WHAT
- Trust my gut
- Be careful to record anything that I think is suspicious - time/date/place
- Put password protection onto my computer.
