WHAT

- Designed to find out what they know and what they don't know
- The example we watched their was a big difference between Add and Sub
- For reporting purposes you go with the highest stage that they can do.

Abacus
- Not just for littlies
- Have a backing so that they are not distracted by what you are wearing.
- Learn to do it from above


- Making bonds to 100. Start by saying what makes 90 (with the 10's) and then how much makes 10 for the ones. Can go bigger 
- Dinah often recommends that we use money to teach add sub for bigger numbers.

SO WHAT/NOW WHAT

I am really looking forward to using my abacus with my groups. We are currently focusing on add/sub and there are a number of my students who still count on and haven't seemed to have developed the ability to partition numbers. I am to use the abacus as a visual aid to help students to see what it looks like when numbers are partitioned.
