A work-on that I took away from our last sessions with Liz Kane in March was to use materials, such as counters, to help students to break words into individual sounds.
The strategy I used was to give each student a pile of counters and place a word card in front of them. Students slide one counter per sound and then slid the sounds together to say the word.
This activity was converted to digital form when we went into lock-down.
This strategy proved to be effective in forcing students to draw on their letter sound knowledge and to focus on what sounds join together to form words. It also gave students a strategy that they could use independently when encountering a word that they don't know how to either say or spell.
We also used phoneme fingers when encoding to help with spelling.
From my observations I noticed that this is a skill that a number of students in my class need to continue to practise. Students, for whatever reason tended to combine sounds or associate the wrong sound with letters. As students learn more about spelling patterns and rules I expect to see an improvement in this area.
