Liz Kane - Structured Literacy - Teacher Knowledge - 02/03/2021

WHAT

Decoding x language comprehension = simple view of reading

The Reading Rope - Scarboroughs (Spelling)

When you teacher you need to be thinking about - m i teaching phonological awareness? Or am I teaching vocabulary?

How can we integrate more vocab teaching into our programmes?

The Simple View of Reading has come from research

From this view leads to the structured view of literacy

4 Principles -

- Explicit

- Scope and Sequence (systematic)

- Cumulative - starts with the simple and then builds on from there. There is a reason that we start with m, s f etc

- Diagnostic - noticing and monitoring - noticing the kids that are having the simple difficulties in what is being learned.

These principles help us to reflect on our teaching.

The Four Pillars

- The alphabetic principle

- Phonics

These two are the most important and link together on the rope

- Fluency - letter level - word level - sentence level - book level - using the sound pack helps to build on this

- Vocab - When reading to students - how can I build in intentional teaching of vocab

- Comprehension

*Reading science in schools - great Facebook page to follow.

Orthographic Mapping?  When the sounds of the letters are mapped on. This leads to words becoming sight words

SO WHAT/WHAT NOT

- Go over powerpoint presentations that Liz will send to develop my teacher knowledge

- Watch supplementary videos from Liz to build on this

- Check out Liz's link to orthographic mapping
