 Elements of Structured Literacy:

- Phonological Awareness

- Alphabetic Principle

- Fluency - not just at book level - letter - word - sentence

- Comprehension

Principles

- Explicit - specific, direct (I Do, We Do, You Do)

- Systematic - Simple and complex - (Scope and Sequence)

- Cumulative - Builds on Prior Learning

- Diagnostic - Constant monitoring

Scope and sequence activity - Re-ordering:

- Consonants Short Vowels

- Floss, CVCC

- Consonant clusters, CCVC CCVCC and ch

- Digraphs and multisyllable - Stage 6

- Other vowel patterns - 7.3

- Silent E - 7.4

- Alternate graphemes for short vowels - 7.5

Stage 7 - Very important stage. Liz suggests using character cards to retell the story. The outcome of reading is comprehension - need to always keep this in mind as the goal.

Can bring in PMs in stage 7

Teacher Activity Resource - great for resources and information for teachers to teach at stage 7

Repeated reading - read a page over again (2 or 3 times) to build fluency.

Dictated sentences - say the sentence to the kids - kids say it to a buddy - listen until you hear that the sentences are correct then students right it.

'c' is soft when followed by e, i, y - same as 'g'

Code Lesson

Review - 2 parts of review - sound pack and review (what they have recently learned)
