How do you actively engage in relationships with whānau? Is there anything you could do differently? Better?
When new students arrive in my Akomanga, I make the effort to call their parents within the first week to touch base around how they have settled in. I also make myself available before and after school to talk with parents. I will frequently communicate with parents positive behaviour, particularly for students who have had previous issues in this area.
One thing I could do to further engage whānau is to take the time to phone parents of students that I have not yet met. This could take the form of an informal call to pass on positives I have seen in the class and to see if there are any questions that they may have.
