Reflection - 19.10

You can be present at professional learning or you can be engaged

What do you think is the difference between the two? Can you give an example of each?

In my eyes, being present means physically being there, where as if you are engaged, you are not only there, but you are also playing an active role in what is happening.

During staff/team meetings I make a deliberate effort to engage in productive discourse. I do this by thinking critically about what is being discussed and use my prior knowledge to contribute my point of view.

There are times in the day during my teaching that I feel my energy levels are low. When this happens it feels like I am present, but not necessarily engaged in what is happening. This will more often be only for a short period of time and I will. catch myself and switch to engage mode. Perhaps this is not necessarily a bad thing...Sometimes backing away and letting the students manage their own learning and follow the class routines and structures doesn't need a great amount of teacher input. Something to ponder moving forward...
