CNS Call Back Day - 09/07/18

Vision of the NZ Curriculum and our 'WHY'

  • We should start with the why and then move outwards to the how and what.
  • Understanding the 'Why' helps us to change behaviour.
  • Began constructing a vision for CNS
My Thoughts...

What is important to me? Why do I teach? Why is it important to me?

For me my values are something that I feel strongly about and I am driven to help students learn values that will help them to function and contribute as positive members of society.

My Thoughts...

Our group focused on Vygotsky. Thinking about how this might affect my practise, the key points to draw from the what we discussed are - Know your students, allow opportunities for peer interactions and effective teacher questioning.

Knowing my students:
-Planning for observation time and recording my observations on my planning will help me to identify students and combinations of students.

Opportunities for Peer interactions:

This is something that I will beed to plan for in my programmes - make time for it!

Effective teacher questioning:

Asking questions that prompt students to think about the skills that they exhibited or the mistakes that they made will help them to value the process more so than the outcome. What mistakes did you make and what did you learn from them?

Formative assessment

John Hatie - Visible Learning

Implications on my teaching...there were two main learnings that I took from our reading and subsequent discussion. The first one is around the evaluation of teaching and in terms of the effectiveness it has on student learning. This is something that I think gets forgotten (for me anyway_ and is something that I need to spend more time considering. Just because it worked in the past, doesn't mean that it will always be successful.

The second key learning was around passion. Hattie mentions that passion reflects the thrill, as well as the frustrations of learning; it can be infectious, it can be taught, it can be modelled, and it can be learnt. I am passionate about maths and always try and express this expression when talking with children. I feel like I haven't expressed the same passion for other areas of the curriculum and need to remember to do this moving forward.

The STC's

We discussed in groups using a round robing approach how we are meeting the standards and what evidence we have to show this.

I plan to continue to use my blog as a record of what I am doing that links in with the criteria. I need to add more evidence of my day-to-day teaching, not just my P.D. I will do this through the use of the blogger ap on my phone
