Learning Through Play - Longworth Education - 09.08
WHAT
Constructivist theories have impacted on how our schooling system in NZ has been structured. In particular, Piaget. We need to move away from the age of students and move to focus more on students' developmental level.
Pre-Operational Thinkers (3-7 years)
- Self-centred egocentric)
- Play is often fleeting
- Magical thinking
Concrete-Operational Thinkers (7-12)
- Begins to think abstractly
- Starting to realise that people have different perspectives
- Developing an understanfing of reversibility
Responding To Play
Notice - Recognise - Respond
Observation sheet: Really impportant to recognise as well as notice.
Curriculum links are always there - just need to identify.
Responding by:
- Loose parts/Resourcing
- Books/Literary Resources
- Experts (could be done using an expert in another location (Zoom))
- Artefacts
- Video/digital tools
Some considerationsL
- Timing of response - It's ok to hold of your response to the next day by say - "yesterday I noticed...here is..."
Socio dramatic play when students are in character is the exception. Don't interupt this play or gift knowledge as it might pop the bubble.
- Relevance: developmentally, type of play, goal of players
- Curriculum connect (gifting of knowledge)
Resulting DEcisions
- Direct or indirect response
...
Vygotsky - Zone of Proximal Development
- Know when to respond when students are leaving their zone of proximal development
SO WHAT/NOW WHAT
- Continue using observation sheet focus on notice as well as recognise.
- Take photos to share at team meetings to discuss possible responses and Curriculum links.
- Consider the idea of calling on an expert - this could be remotely via Zoom...
