Teaching other across the board

One of the challenges I face moving into relief teaching is that my past experience has been exclusively teaching year 7/8 students. As a consequence, I am out of the loop so to speak of the curriculum requirements of other age groups. In terms of teaching strategies, behavioral management approaches and classroom management, I feel confident that I have the skills and know how to apply what I know to other age groups. In saying this, there is still a tremendous amount I still have to learn, this is why I am so passionate about the teaching as inquiry process, and is part of my motivation for moving into relief teaching.

Back to the issue of Curriculum content, I figure the best place to start is to go back to the Nz Curriculum and review the expectations for what skills and knowledge children should be capable of and know at each level of the curriculum. The key documents I will read over are - the literacy learning progressions and literacy/numeracy national standards documents. I will initially read over each level briefly, but the plan is to delve deeper into each level as the need arises, i.e when I am called upon to teach a different level.
