Creating independent, self-managing learners
I consider Mathematics to be one of my teaching strong suits so-to-speak. However I am always working on my Mathematics programming and considering how to best deliver the mathematics curriculum.
One of the areas that I am always trying to develop in my students is their ability to self-manage and work independently. To achieve this I have designed a math programme which allows students choice, but at the same time has clear expectations for what needs to be achieved.
Students are given a math booklet at the beginning of each week. Within the booklet is a range of activities and challenges, with some being compulsary while others are for extra credit. The compulsary activities are not always the same and are chaged on a regular basis. Students are given the whole week to complete the compulsary activities. The order of completion and where and who students choose to work with is up to them. There are allocated times for groups to work with the teacher on specific focus with follow-up questions set. Math booklets are differentiated in terms of difficulaty of and type of questions.
