Date:

Focus:
Managing Behaviour
Big Idea:
Escalating and De-escalation of behaviour
Key Ideas/Messages that informed/or challenge my teaching practice
Behaviour levels:
Anxiety
  • Students exhibit anxiety differently
  • Best approach - supportive and empathetic

Defensive
  • Can look different
  • Be directive - redirect behaviour
  • Take charge
  • Clear
  • Give positive and negative choices
  • Allow time and space

Acting out
  • Loss of rationality
  • Brain not working
  • Can reason with
  • Give space - direct to quiet space
  • Offer choice - be flexible and creative

Tension reduction:
  • Decrease in physical and emotional levels
  • Follow up doesnt need to be immediate.
  • Rebuild relationships
  • Separate the behaviour from the child “I like you, but what are we going to do about your mouth?”

Things to thing about:
  • Proxemics - how close and how you stand
  • Kiesics - posture gestures and facials
  • Listening empathetically
  • Precipitating factors - things out of control the effect student behaviours

Implications/Actions for my teaching practice
We were given many handouts about creating a behaviour plan. Use behaviour plan steps and template to create a behaviour plan for target students in my class
Reflection on actions to share at next meeting
Follow up session next school holidays...
