Early words does not involve phonics

What is the best way to learn words?
  • By sight
  • Memory of the visual pattern of the word
  • Graphic knowledge

Tips: Dont sound out, tell the word then repeat whilst pointing at it. See it/say it/touch it

Searchlight model

  • Phonics
  • Context
  • Grammar
  • Wordrecognition and graphic knowledge

When should hfw be taught

IN class - in the big book, usnig word posters or word lists, in the guided reading book.

E.g - i am going to teach you a new word today - hold up a card with ‘the’ on it - “this is the. What is is? Move it around and check students are following it with their eyes. Use a second word as well - like you name. If you see the word the in the big book let me know. Reference back to the bigbook. Ecourage them to find the in the story they are reading themselves.

Day 2 - new word.

Day 3 - new word

Early Words Programme

For struggling learners.

  • One to one programme
  • Systematic
  • Explicit
  • Short (5min)
  • Daily
  • Teaches words at word an sentence level
  • Child progress at their own pace

At this point I realised that this programme is more suited for lower level students. There might be some students in my class that this could work for. E.g Lakai and Tyler. Will trial for Tyler in Term 3. At the very least it will help give him a kick-start and get into better homework routines. Ref Early words book at school.
