The Nature of learning

Big Idea:

• Dominant concept of learning socio- constructivist

• Ultimate goal of learning is to acquire adaptive expertise

• The gate keepers of learning: Emotion and Motivation

Key Ideas/Messages that informand/or challenge my teaching practice

• Adaptiive expertise is centered around the ability to apply knowledge and skills flexibly across a range of situations

• Teachers actions whether deliberate of not deliberate send students a message about how they are percieved.

• Emotion and cognition operate seemlesly in the brain. If a students emotional needs are meet then the are more likely to respond positivly to learning situations

Implications/Actions for my teaching practice

My main focus in the next few weeks will be on helping students feel emotionally safe and welcome. To do this I will focus on the small things, such as welcoming them warmly at the beginning of the day and taking interest in how they are feeling throughout the day. When students begin to feel more comfortable with me and their classroom surroundings then learning will improve.
