This year I have tried to involve students in the assessment process as much as possible. 

After completing handwriting there are specially nominated handwriting monitors to go around the room and check others work. Their job is to highlight green for go (things that have been done well), and pink for think (things that need to be worked on. Students also provide oral feedback while doing this.

We have also used the Seesaw app on the I-pads for students to talk about what they are proud of with their writing and what they need to work on.
