Focus:
Tataiako
Big Idea:
What is Tataiako?
Key Ideas/Messages that informed/or challenge my teaching practice
Tataiako includes 5 competencies that teachers and leaders need to develop to help Maori learners achieve educationally as Maori
Implications/Actions for my teaching practice
What is one challenge for you from this workshop?

It has been a challenge drawing on my prior knowledge regarding Tataiako as it has been a long time since I have considered the principles of this document and how they relate to my current teaching practices.

What is one thing in you teaching that has reinforced by this workshop?

The workshop has reaffirmed the notion that we should have high expectation for all learners and it encourages me to continue to strive to provide opportunities for all learners to reach their full potential.

What is one challenge that you face in application of the Tataiako competencies?

One challenge that I have often considered is how can I create learning for maori learners that reflect and affirm identity, language and culture. This is something that I could do through encouraging more sharing in the classroom, getting students to talk more about their experiences outside the classroom. We do this frequently in writing, but little is done orally which is a strength of some of my Maori students.

What do i do that makes me hard to learn from?

I don’t often talk about my background, interests and experiences. Doing this more might help students relate to and trust me….
