Reflection
This was our first session with Dinah Harvey who will be working with us next year around how we teach maths at CNS. We spent some time looking at student samples and talked about the mathematical thinking they were using as opposed to the end product (the answer).
We discussed the relationship between knowledge, strategy and application and how maths is learned through meaningful and engaging contexts.
The big thing that stuck out for me was context. Dinah suggest taking maths problems, keeping the essence of the question, but change the context in which the maths applies to something relevant to the students.
This is something that I haven't contemplated doing before and I could see how engagement could be increased simply by change the context of the question to something that resonates with the students. Some examples of context that I could use in the future - gaming, familiar places around Palmerston North and sports.
