Dinah Harvey - Maths P.D - 19/02

WHAT

Mini Gloss

Start with ADD/Sub strategy question
Don't make the first question you ask the students a maths one
Ask the question in a context that appeals to the learner
Use the first question to gauge where to go with the next question - easier strategy/harder strategy
If you have time, dig into the knowledge gaps that they might have.
Find a can do, then find a can't do
CONTEXT!!

Group Session

Today we are going to do some interesting adding
We are going to make our own bank with our own money
I need a number between 1-10 (used kids names from a list - levelled the questions based on students strategy stages)
Fletcher - I need a number between 10-20 (wrote these down)
Less than 5
a 10's number
Students then made their paper money (they did all the leg work) - they initialled their notes as well
5 numbers but they had to make 6 notes
Our first task is to put all of our $50 notes in the middle.
19 fifties - how much money do we have? One student demonstrated joining to fifties together to make $100
Wrote the number story on a whiteboard.
Did the same for $3
Challenge - work with a buddy and make as close as you can to $60. You have to use money from both person.
Lots of buddy talk
looked at some of the student's strategies

SO WHAT

Student ownership of activities are key - get them engaged early creating the materials to start off with

Context - frame GLOSS questions in a context familiar to the student

Mixed ability grouping - know the students so that you can get them involved at the right level.

Teacher as the guide getting students to re-voice and steering the conversation in the correct direction

NOW WHAT

I plan to mini gloss a few students from each strategy range to try and identify learning gaps that I can then target in groups. In doing these interviews I will ensure that I frame the questions in a context that the student is familiar with

I have begun to re-think how I am teaching maths and will look to make some small changes in my groups sessions to first engage students with materials early and then get students to drive the session with their ideas and answers. I need to pre-plan beforehand the direction of the session so I can best guide students to what they need to achieve.
