Dinah Harvey - Maths P.D - 18/02

Dinah Harvey - Maths P.D - Students Session - 18/02

WHAT

SO WHAT
- Kids need access to materials - This needs to be done early!
- Lots of student talk. Most of the teacher talk is questions
- Initially students need to be able to explore the materials.
- Symbols come last!

NOW WHAT
Previously I have insisted on students putting up there hands to answer questions. Dinah started the session by saying that shrugging shoulders is not an answer, people need to speak up with their answers. At times Dinah directed questions at certain kids to ensure there was fair coverage. Another aspect that I need to do more on is allowing students to take control by getting their own equipment and in some cases creating their own resources. Another takeaway (no pun intended) is having students work with a buddy. This further increased the opportunities for students to talk about their learning and allows the opportunity for students to re-voice their buddy's ideas if they are not confident with their own.
