Flowed onto discuss this quote from Russell Bishop:
‘What’s good for Māori is good for everybody, however,
what’s good for everybody is not necessarily good for Māori.’
We then talked in groups about our Maori students and how we are helping to accelerate progress.
Personal reflection - what do I specifically do to uphold the vision and intent of Ka Hikitia.
I strongly feel that one of my core strengths as a teacher is my ability to foster relationships with the students in my class. I do this by asking about, and listening to, their problems and taking an interest in their lives outside the classroom. I have recently had some very interesting discussions with some of my boys about Fortnite! I also try and include student voice into what we are doing in the classroom to help give students a feeling of ownership and belonging. I have recently been thinking about how I can do this more. What parts of what we do in the classroom on a daily basis can I hand over responsibility for to my students? This something that I would like to brainstorm when I get the chance.
