WHAT
Maths Games:
Maths games that eliminate people early on because that have not been fast enough should be discouraged. Students that stay in the longest get the most practise and are ones that need it the least.
Best taught in a small group first.
Be aware of online games that offer multiple choices. Kids click at random[
Played Make 10. Take out one card and then deal out cards and match 2 cards each to make 10. When you get to the end you will know what the hidden card is as it will match together with the last card on the table to make 10.
3 in a row game (juniors, but could be adapted). Students rolled 2 dice and then drew the dice on a piece of paper and added a plus in between. Use a grid with a 4 x 5 grid with possible answers. Have two teams with a different colour pieces of paper. Teams take turns drawing paper from the ones that were created earlier. If the answer is on the grid, then they cover it with their teams colour. The goal is to get 3 in a row.
7's
Each player is dealt 7 cards.
Both players add up their cards
Player with the highest total wins
Winner gets dealt a card which is the number of points that they get
SO WHAT/NOW WHAT
I need evaluate the maths games that I am currently using in my class in relation to the 5 principles as listed about. I am interested to see how they stack up, as in my eyes I consider them to be robust and effective games. One thing that did stick with me from this session was how Dinah got kids to create some of the games. I truely believe that this is the best way to get students instantly engaged and have ownership of the games thus increasing engagement.
