WHAT
There is a logical order for teaching statistics
Literacy - data display - investigation - probability.
Statistics needs as much time as all the geometry strands joined together.
Went through an investigation around starting a new restaurant. Questions around the room which are colour coded. People walk around and drop a bean on the colour of the corresponding question that they most like.
Take the data and make pictographs, then block graphs, strip graphs, pie graphs.
Data card ref photo put into Venn diagram circles
NOW WHAT/SO WHAT
The key learnings that I have taken from the session and the subsequent session that we had with Dinah was that there are three key areas of statistics learning (excluding probability) - Literacy - Data Display - Investigation. Kids can't do an investigation until they have the knowldge (data literacy) or skills (data display). Therefore, when planning for statistics in the coming weeks I need to begin with statistics literacy and data display to enable to give students the skills and knowledge to conduct an investigation. The other core learning that I took from these sessions is the importance of context. At level 3, students should be investigating genuine topics that are relevant to not just the class but the school.
