A large part of our discussion today was around our School's data. We explored the achievement data from 2019 to try and identify target areas for growth. This gave a good insight into the cohorts that need the most support across the school. I am looking forward to taking this a step further when as a team we take a deeper look into the data to investigate the specific areas that need attention. For example - what areas of writing are the gaps in? What areas of maths do we need to pay more attention to?
We also looked at the engagement survey conducted last year. One of the more concerning things that jumped out at me was that many students don't feel safe at school. Additionally, There were a number of students that identified bullying as a problem that needs to be fixed at CNS. This prompts me to think about what I am doing in my class to make students feel safe. I think one of the things that can be done is to give students strategies that they can use when someone is having difficulties with another student. I often think that student's don't have the coping strategies to deal with these types of situations. I am also interested to look into ways that I can help students to build their resilience.
A pleasing piece of data to come from the survey was that many students feel comfortable with talking with their teacher if there is a problem.
