WHAT
Whole class rhymes - clapping and chanting
Group 1 (stage 3)
- Started with letter cards
- Combined them together to make words (some not real words)
- Practised sounding them out and sliding
- Practised encoding making a list in the back of their books.
- Encouraged the use of phoneme fingers
- Addressed d and b confusion
- Handwriting gaps were addressed at this point.
- Moved on to decoding (reading) using decodable texts.
- Students whisper read while the teacher swivelled and listened.
- Students then were given cards with sentences on them from the level below. The purpose was to encourage fluency.
- Heart words - encoding - coding to address handwriting.
Group 2 (Stage 4)
- Started with dictation sentences. Corrected handwriting as she went - very particular in terms of letter formation, capitalisation and punctuation
SO WHAT/NOW WHAT
- I need to position myself so that I can monitor letter formation and spelling as I go
- Can used the letter sound cards to create words to practise sounding out (can do this sometimes instead of using the counters.
- Little stickers on the back of her letter cards as a little reminder - this is something that I could do as well.
- Heart words were addressed as part of the group sessions - practising encoding these.
