WHAT
- We do a lot of work on sound packs and decoding words- We also need to allow time for students to practise fluency. Book boxes and books at and below their level to develop fluency
- Make a call based on where students are at. If the kids in the group are nailing the sound pack, then there is no point continuing with it. Work on something the group is having trouble with
- Using counters to help students split words into sounds is a very useful skill
- Sometimes when kids are having trouble on a word get them to say the vowel sound which will give them a good idea of how to say the word.
- Kids need to know the difference between short and long vowel sounds. We wont them to be able to hear and isolate these sounds.
- Liz recommends following the lesson sequence in The Code book when teaching spelling.
- Liz has made Google Slides of the different word lists.
SO WHAT/NOW WHAT
- Review the back of The Code and look to perhaps modify the way that I am teaching my spelling sessions
- Think about how I can use Google Slides to simplify my spelling lessons
