Initial chat (one-on-one):
- will probably have one or two groups at stage 7 (this is a literacy level - reading/writing)- other groups will be working on other books
- The code to be used for spelling. Liz suggests that it is best suited to teach this as a whole class beginning on year 3 level and then moving through to year 4.
- Students will still need some practice on deletion and swapping of sounds.
Teaching heart words:
- students should still be sounding out the words.
- For example said. The s and d still can be sounded out as per usual.
- Discus the irregular part of the word (ai) and put a heart around this part, not the whole word.
Struggling students need a blast on phonemic awareness. What is the first sound? What is the last sound? And using word mats and counters to isolate and slide sounds without even looking at words.
