Maths P.D - On Retreat - Kennedy Park

WHAT

Challenges for 2021:

- Engaging, challenging tasks with connections and larger groups for a longer time.

- Developing mathematical dispositions (for all learning)

Maths Challenge

8,2,3,7

Use any operation - how many different answers can you get?

Working in groups

Share answers  - other groups have to work out what the equation is.

Key pondering - How often are the kids in my class asking questions?

Looking at Chapter 4 of Effective Pedagogy in Mathematics

- At CNS Teachers will - make maths a positive and enjoyable experience, design and find tasks that are relevant to out students, praise the right dispositions, Knowing where tasks fit curriculum levels and students needs

Explain Vs Justify - Explaining is what you did and justifying is why you did it. How can I promote this?

"Make maths memorable, not stuff to remember"

SO WHAT/NOW WHAT
Don't start with testing - use last year's data
- Don't start with knowledge and fast maths
- Use Technology and voice recording as a way to capture student voice.
- Be prepared to ask the question - "why did you do it that way" to encourage students to justify their mathematical thinking.
- Use context in the initial weeks to engage students in maths learning using themselves as the focus.
