Shane Fletcher - Crusaders Manager - Leadership - 25/01
WHAT
- Vulnerability is the greatest gauge of courage
- Connection - the energy that exist when seen, heard and valued
- Authenticity - Authenticity is about presence linving in the moement with conviction and confidence in staying true
- Everyone has the potential to be a leader
- The power lies in the team
- You are not going to win every moment. Be aware of those moments, don't let them stack up and define the bigger picture.
- We make judgements about people based on surface features. By doing so, we often miss the opportunity to connect with someone on a deeper level.
- Just because it's in writing, doesn't mean that everyone has the same interpretation of what it means.
- Don't assume that people are interpretting the message that you are sending in the same way.
- They won't care how much you know until they know how much you care.
- Don't count the days, make theh days count.
- Attitude is contantious, it's worth catching.
SO WHAT/NOW WHAT
Moving into the start of 2023, there are a number of key messages that are applicable to my role as kaiako. The main one for me is the importance of connections. Shane defines connection as the energy that exists when people are seen, heard and valued. This links with another of his statements - 'They won't care how much you know until they know how much you care. There are a lot of things that need to be done in the first few weeks of Term. I need to make a deliberate effort to plan for opportunities to connect with students. This means allowing for moments were I can sit with students and korero without any ulterior motive. These moments naturally happen during learning through play, eating times and schedueled break times. Therefore it is is vitally important that I make myself visable and present during these moments. This might pushing back other tasks to a later time. I believe making the effort to connect with students in the first few days/weeks of the Term will have positivie flow on effects for the remainder of the school year.
