Chris Braid - lifting assessment data

Date:
2.5.17
Focus:
Chris Braid - lifting assessment data
Big Idea:
how kids read and How to teach and assess reading
Key Ideas/Messages that informed/or challenge my teaching practice
Background

Reading critically = Decode

Decoding needs phonetic awareness/alphabetic principle/word knowledge

Students need to map words out by looking closely at the letters. Meaning and structure are compensatory strategies, which help, but can cause problems when it comes to spelling.

How to teach

B-a-t don’t read this as separate letters you need to separate but blend them - keep your voice going.

Start with the letters and then use the context afterwards to check. Students need to know/learn the patterns of words.

Syllabification - great word
Implications/Actions for my teaching practice
  • This session challenged my thinking on how I teach reading. In the past I have given equal weighting to visual and meaning strategies when teaching students to read.
  • From here I will have a close look at the Bryant test data that I have and use this to identify areas of need and thus inform my teaching
