Observation - Watching The Code being taught - 22.06.2020

WHAT

Group one - one student - Stage 4 (mastered stage 3)
Sound pack:
- put ones that were incorrect into a seperate pile. Second chance to get these words. Use this as a teaching opportunity.

Picture cards (syllable practise):
- Clapped out the syllables

Word families:
- Jack wrote tin. He then had to change the word to pin. Used sound pack to show letters.
- Continued with more words. from the same family - sin bin etc. Gin is a tricky one.

Next Group
- What did we last focus on? ee and ea (these were shown on the wall)
- What is a word that has 'ea' in it?
- More recap
- Today our new sound is - oo
- Draw a bubble on your page and write oo in the middle. 'oo' makes the ___ sound - write as many words as you can with this sound.
- Looked at examples and discussed the different sounds that the letter combo can make.
- Students then used their brainstorm to write a sentence with the oo spelling making the sound like in foot.
- Repeat for the other sound
-

Next Group
- Make a list of words that have the 'sh' diagraph in it
- Skipped a line and then wrote a dictated sentence from Tim's quiz card
- Highlighted the diagraph

Other notes:
- Use judgement for decodable level - focus on stage after mastery, but don't hold students back
- Use Grapheme phoneme test sheet with more than one sound per letter combo for testing students
- Have word examples ready in my head before testing students.
- Can accept either sound option when testing words.
- Remember to recap on prior learning
- Have a clear sound focus for each session

SO WHAT/NOW WHAT

- Write words examples on back of sound pack cards
- Write out a standard lesson plan for teaching each sound
- Split stage 7 sound pack into subsections
- Get Tim's quiz dictation sentences
