Place Value - there is a sequential order that it needs to be taught. Gaps mean that they could progress with steps further down the chain.


1. Read and write numbers to 100

2. Count forwards and backwards - after and before - 1 more, 1 less - 10 more, 10 less. Break into the sequence

3. Make with materials

4. Ordering numbers - numbers on a number line with missing numbers

5. Renaming - 35 as 30 + 5

6. Calculate 6 + 38, 27 + 30

The first 5 steps are number knowledge. 


Matt's sessions

Going around the circle - "Tell us a number between..." Slightly different questions for different kids.

Game - we are going to play a game - Bingo - you will make your own game boards and numbers. 2 digit numbers. Dinah prompted students to say numbers again to build fluency and reduce teacher talk about organisational things. Kids made thier own game boards based on Matt's example which was made from student numbers. Students ask to read out a line of their numbers. They then swapped bingo boards and read one of. the lines. Matt asked some kids before and after questions. This changed to the kids asking the questions to each other. Could also use the numbers board to order the numbers on one line. Matt then showed the cards that were to be used, example - "cover a number that has a 1 in the ones place' This then lead to some learning using equipment (place value blocks and arrow cards to model numbers and promote discussion. Started playing the game, but buddied up kids to compensate for the disparity in abilities.
