Mana Potential

WHAT 6 atua between Ranginui and Papatūānuku: Rongomatāne (yellow) Māui Tikiti (orange) Rūaumoko (purple) Tūmatauenga (red) Tawhirimātea (blue) Tangaroa (turquoise) Firstly we used these atua as a way of checking in e.g - how has your week gone so far? It is important to note that this is not linear and how you feel can chance throughout the day. Can be compared to the zones of regulation. Extends on from this however with Tawhirimātea and Tangaroa which relate to recovery and resoration. A key phrase that teachers can use is "is there anything I can do to help you?" Following this we talked about Papatūānuku: accessing our sources of strength. One key message is that it is good for students to have some that they can check in or get help from. Needs to be someone in that moment and could change depending on the circumstances - e.g in the classroom or out in the playground. We also talked about how everyone has a whole whakapapa that sits behind them. "Even if the room only has two people in it it is full". Students can complete Their 'Taonga Tuku Iho' (ref photo) which shows their family, team and kura connections. These should be made visible in the classroom and used to make connections. Teachers, management and support staff should also complete one. A powerful consideration for teachers is to prompt students to think about who (from their whakapapa) will they make proud today. Our next focus was to have a brief look at one of our values - Mana. We talked about identifying what the value is, i.e respect, and what we can do to show this. We finished our session talking about compliments. It is important when we recieve a compliment to thank the person that gave it to you and accept it. Can use a ball metaphor to pass the complement. Students can then refer back to these comments to 'boost' their mana. NOW WHAT Two key things I aim to implement in my classroom beginning in Term 1 are: - Create my own 'Taonga Tuku Ihu' and have students in my class do the same. These will then be displayed in a promenant place. - Talk to students about having a 'go to' person who keeps them happy and safe or someone that can help them during learning time.
