Structured Literacy at CNS
WHAT
Dibels
- A diagnostic tool that informs risk
- Identify areas that need explicit teaching
- Can assess fluency and comprehension
- Doesn't tell us exactly where the gaps are.
- We are still going to use sound and word testing.
- Dibels will replace running records
- Each year has a different booklet.
- 6 types of tests
- Assessment 3 times per year. Very prescribed. T1 (weeks 3-5), T2 (we are not doing this test and T4 (weeks 4-6).
- Comes with a spreadsheet to analyse data
- Fluenccy is: Speed (practised), Prosody (expresion) and Accuracy (taught)
The Code
- Term 1 - catch up priority group (ref sheet from Marianne 2023)
- For my 3/4 class priority group kids will be below Year 3.
- Rest of the class could do vocab/reading/morphology (It is up to us to decide)
- Term 2 - whole class, but still do priority group. Priority group gets font loaded and top up. Whole class gets 3 lessons and priority group 5. Top up could be whole class (this is a good suggestion!). Friday is blended review (10 sentences is the recommendation).
Fluencey pairs
students are paired with a purposeful partner to read a text repeatedly (they can take turns or do choral reading). Partner A and Partner B
Partner A reads for 4 mins
Partner B is the coach
Partner B reads for 4mins
Partner A is the coach
Reading to (modelling)
Choose or create a text related to your novel. Follow the weekly plan adding in the vocab and reading activities - ref Marianne's slides. This could fit in as my Shared Reading. Doing 2 out of the 3 days on the example plan could work well. This would also work well in my guided groups. The echo reading would work well during guided sessions.
Scope and Sequence
Elly went through how to use sound cards (instructions are on the back)
NOW WHAT
- Conduct spelling testing in week 1 to determine priority group
- Begin teacher priority group using focused lessons as described on attached sheet from Marianne.
- Do The Code Top-up lessons as a whole class but through hand writting (beginning Term 2)
- Incorporate Modelling as part of Shared Read
- Incorporate Fluency pairs as part of Read to Friend
- I will use sound pack cards (starting with the basic set) when I get a spare 5mins before the bell goes.
- Cards will also be used for target learning (those still on decodables) when I take my target students during Daily 5.
